a-england – Until the Day Break (+ comparison Sleeping Palace)

by Deborah

You know you’re a true lacquerista if your birthday wishlist is filled with nail polish. It does not come as a surprise that it describes me to the t. Although my birthday was almost two months ago already, I do want to show you this polish that I received, which is a colour that I believe is rather underappreciated within the nail polish community. I intend to change that with this review, so buckle up!

First of all: I love these dark, gloomy, goth colours! Adina describes this colour as a midnight garnet, and that is definitely a good description of this polish. It’s dark, garnet, kind of plum, and so shiny! I feel like a witch wearing this colour, it’s so magical!

Simeon Solomon – The Sleepers and One that Watcheth (1867)

Until The Day Break is part of Simeon Solomon’s Reverie collection. When I googled this, the painting above popped up. All colours of a-england’s collection seem to return in this painting, so I assume this was the inspiration for the collection. I love how much a-england gets inspired by art! In this case, the specific colour gets described on a-england’s website as:

Blackened tone of burgundy with purple hues. Beaming with a flaming linear holo, this shade is ready to be pierced by the sun.

And I love that imagery!

These are just two coats over a basecoat, without a topcoat. The shine is great, and so is the opacity. I think it could be a one-coater if you’d like it to, but I prefer two thinner coats over one thick one. Especially in the case of glitters and shimmers: more coats provide more depth and a better pay-off for the polish in its entirety.

Comparison to Sleeping Palace

When I swatched this polish, it immediately reminded me of another a-england polish: Sleeping Palace. I showed that one earlier on this website, and I think it’s a great polish as well. In the two photos above, you can see Until The Day Break on my index and ring finger, and Sleeping Palace on my middle finger and pinkie; both two coats over base coat, no topcoat. Sleeping Palace is slightly more brown, lighter, and muted. Until The Day Break also seems to have a bit more depth to it. They look rather similar, but then the light hit it just right…

BOOOOM! The difference is immediately visible when met with light. I believe this would definitely support the quote I pasted earlier: it does wake up with a beam of sunlight! Don’t get me wrong: I love both of these colours. But Until The Day Break hits just right, and is such a stunning, vampy polish, that I cannot help but stare at my nails when I wear this polish.
